GAELIC GAMES:

El FEILE has been at the forefront of Gaelic Games development in what is known as the Iberian Region. We are the current sponsors of the trophies for the Iberian Regional Championships in both men's and ladies football. Those cups safely reside in Barcelona after the local club Barcelona Gaels emerged victorious in both disciplines last year. They are one of the most progressive clubs in Europe and in November capped their busiest year yet by hosting for a second year running the finals day of the European football championships. It was a massive undertaking for the club and they brilliantly delivered what is the biggest GAA event ever to have taken place on Continental Europe witnessed by a high ranking Croke Park representation headed by no less than the recently retired director General Liam Mulvihill.

Each year the festival offers a platform to the club to highlight their great work which includes several youth initiatives within the city, recruit new players and raise some badly needed funds through their local lottery draw the now infamous Gaelotto. They are the only club in Europe who run this traditional fundraising device that is so at the heart of grassroots Gaelic games in Ireland. Their sellers will be out and about over the weekend so please support them and you could walk away with a jackpot. The success of the Gaels and their leadership within the region has been instrumental in development on the peninsula and just lately there has been the seeds of several new teams emerging in Catalonia with almost exclusively native Catalans making up their playing staff.

The success of the Gaels and their leadership within the region has been instrumental in development on the peninsula and just lately there has been the seeds of several new teams emerging in Catalonia with almost exclusively native Catalans making up their playing staff.

The Barcelona Gaels are almost 60% Catalans and it is this kind of local involvement which is creating sustainability for the club and in a way they have developed in the exact same way as EL FEILE.

Barcelona Gaels have secured a venue and want to use the platform of El Feile to try and recruit players for their Men's and Women's Gaelic football teams and bring attention to the sport. They are creating an Open Day with an exhibition match, in which they are inviting anyone who would like to to come along and get a practical feel for the games. All levels are welcome and will be catered for from beginners to old Masters.

There will also be a Long Puck competition for hurling fans. Anyone who is interested in joining in the action can send a mail to the club Secretary Mick McGrath at barcelonagaels2005@yahoo.com to make contact in advance but everyone is perfectly welcome to turn up on the day, just bring your boots!!

RUGBY:

Rugby is at the heart of the Celtic psyche and the fortunes of the Celtic nations have not been that favourable of late, particularly the Irish who suffered the most disastrous World Cup imaginable. Anyway it all makes for a very interesting 6 Nations championship this year as many teams will be looking to restore pride and the annual changing of the guard takes place as veterans make way for new blood.

Once again the final day falls right in the middle of EL FEILE which was quite the showdown last year between the Irish and the French who just prevailed. This year the final day blockbuster meeting is likely to be England V Ireland in Twickenham.

Whatever the outcome there is only one place to be Saturday night and that's Sala Apolo, right!
