This year has seen various initiatives aimed at introducing Gaelic games to the children of Barcelona. As well as organising some activities at a summer school in the Pyrennes, this was followed by an Irish Cultural Day at the Catalan Museum of Immigration and the training facilities of FD Espaņol with the help of 16 students from the Lasalle University.
There were 85 kids invited to the museum from the local school in San Adria de Besos where they were divided up into 4 groups. Each group then spent about 15 minutes on each of 4 workshops, one on Irish language another on Irish myths and legends and an introduction to Gaelic Football. There was a tour of the immigration exhibition at the museum where the Barcelona Gaels featured.
After the cultural part of the morning finished, the kids then proceeded to the football part which was expertly organised and delivered by the 16 students who had received a coaching course previously provided by Eamon Ryan from the GAA in Dublin. The event was a huge success and there were several subsequent culture days.
The objective was that it would develop into a larger event as part of EL FEILE '08 which we hope will continue as an element of future festivals. The consensus of everyone who has taken part in these days is that it was very rewarding and another example of EL FEILE's inclusiveness within the local community.
This event is not open to public.
